Not unlike his heaping head of dreads, Fiji-born and U.K./U.S.-based beatsmith FreQ Nasty's DJ style is a tangled, multitextured cluster, with sounds and influences ranging from hip-hop and reggae to rock and electro. Nasty was a pioneer in the early U.K. breakbeat scene, and his current genre-bludgeoning sets still retain the big breaks, but the tempos and tunes are more varied, sizzling and swaying in freaky yet always-funky ways.
