DJ Paul Oakenfold Rides the Waves

Sea-breezin' on the Queen Mary

By Lina Lecaro

Published on June 12, 2008

Sea breezes and electro beats make for an audibly invigorating combo, and when a DJ as big as Paul Oakenfold decides to ride the waves — and wax — your average dingy just won't do. Oakey, touring in support of his recent release Greatest Hits and Remixes, will be rocking the boat, alright, at one of his fave rave spots, the suitably epic Queen Mary. We fully expect a perfect storm of crowd-pleasing, hook-laden, rhythm rockers. Say what you will about the "rockstar DJ" and his sometimes predictable pump-'n'-jump style, his original tracks — "Starry Eyed Surprise" (the best thing Shifty from Crazytown ever did), "Faster Kill Pussycat" (ditto Britney Murphy) and "Ready Steady Go" — are irresistible in a mega-crowd environment. The capacity for this one is 2,500! With opening sets from Mark Lewis, Reza, Luv & Lodi and Paul Ahi, this benefit for Dance 4 Life (helping HIV-positive youth) should be a swimming success. Rooms are even available on the ship. 1126 Queens Hwy., Long Beach; Sat., June 14, 8 p.m.-3 a.m.; over 18. Tickets at www.groovetickets.com. Room reservations at www.queenmary.com. Info: (818) 843-7522.
