Bootleg Poppin'

Hawaii 5-0, Bootie LA

By Lina Lecaro

Published on January 30, 2008 at 2:17am

Like his parties at Mood, Tokio and countless other spots before those, BoJesse Christopher's new gathering, Hawaii 5-O, which lands at LAX on Fridays, is sure to offer a nice mix of style-conscious hipsters and Hollywood hoi polloi, the later of which are usually female, and usually hot. (Good for guys on the prowl, at least.) DJ IMG spins, and the dude's scratchy mash-up sets (hip-hop beats plumping up rock, electro and pop fluff — even Britney sounds good with Daft Punk driving the groove, no?) are sure to keep things shakin'. Despite the name, don't expect any hula, though. And while most music snobs find the mashup phenom inane, we think it's inspired and fun in club environs. Some do it better than others, of course, and some of the best bootleg bashin' can be found at Bootie LA (back at the Echo after a brief run at Safari Sam's). This month, the mad mix fixes come courtesy of Paul V, Adrian and the Mysterious D and the Illuminoids (featuring notable punk whiz Howie Pyro). Hawaii 5-0 debuts Fri., Feb. 1 at LAX, 1714 N. Las Palmas Ave., Hlywd.; continues every Fri., 10 p.m.-2 a.m.; over 21. www.BJCevents.com. Bootie LA returns Sat., Feb. 2 to the Echo, 1822 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park; continues the first Sat. of the month, 10 p.m.-2 a.m.; 21 and over; $5 before 10:30 p.m., $10 after. www.bootiela.com.
