BREAKING: PiL Opening 2010 US Tour in LA

Public Image LTD (PiL), the post-punk art-rock project John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) created as a much smarter but less catchy followup to the gamechanging Sex Pistols, will now begin its upcoming US tour not at Coachella, as had been announced for weeks, but at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Lydon and company will play a show at the downtown venue Tuesday, April 13, three days before the Indio festival gig.

Here are some interesting nuggets from the official announcement:

  • A week earlier, on Wednesday, April 7, PiL will "appear on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live Bud Light Golden Wheat Outdoor Stage. PiL's last U.S. TV performance was in 1992 on The Dennis Miller Show where the band played the song "Covered" live in the studio."
  • "[PiL] returned in December 2009 for seven monumental concerts in the United Kingdom-their first shows in 17 years. John Lydon (vocals), Lu Edmonds (guitar), Bruce Smith (drums) and Scott Firth (bass) earned critical and public acclaim for these concerts, with many British media outlets championing them as the shows of the year."
  • Where is Jah Wobble, you ask? Well, he's not part of this PiL (boo!), but you get Lydon plus part of the PiL that recorded Happy? (we at West Coast Sound have a soft spot for that one) and 9, plus sidemen with The Mekons, The Pop Group, The Slits, Björk, Elvis Costello and The Spice Girls.
  • "John Lydon: 'I sound like a bag of kittens thrown down the staircase.'" [This is quoted in the official press release. As a good thing.]
  • "2010 sees the 30th anniversary of the band's first U.S. tour and also their U.S TV debut on American Bandstand, where singer John Lydon invited the audience onstage to dance with the band! Host Dick Clark famously introduced their appearance as 'a memorable moment in rock n roll, something special and interesting.'"

PiL on American Bandstand???? WTF, you say? Watch Lydon & Co. bukkake Dick Clark with a sizzling rendition of "Poptones," after the jump.

Memo to Jimmy Kimmel: think about the future and don't look this clueless on April 7, ok?:
