Alexander McQueen, Rock Star Designer, Dies
Alexander McQueen, the British fashion designer who had earned critical acclaim (and numerous awards) for his innovative and outrageous designs, has died, multiple sources report. The Daily Mail is reporting that his death was a suicide.
His brand's website offers the following statement:
On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family.
Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.
Alexander McQueen's cover for Bjork's Homogenic
McQueen was well-known to music fans for his work with such artists as Bjork and Lady Gaga. In 1997, he designed the iconic cover for Bjork's album Homogenic and directed her video for "Alarm Call." We found a conversation between Bjork and McQueen in Index Magazine wherein the fashion designer discusses what kind of music he would make.
BJORK: If you made music, what would it sound like?
ALEXANDER: If I were a musician, I would search for indigenous music and indigenous instruments and form an orchestra- maybe some wooden pipes from the Amazon and some guitars from India. I'd create a global music that's unlike anything anyone has ever heard. Quite like you do.
BJORK: Would it be upbeat or downbeat?
ALEXANDER: They would have to play Donna Summer. There would be a break beat coming from the Amazon and Vivaldi's Four Seasons from India- and spill drums from New York. I'd mix it all together. How amazing would that be?
BJORK: It sounds good.
ALEXANDER: It would be the longest single on the face of the Earth.

More recently, Lady Gaga incorporated McQueen's designs into her performances, including the video for "Bad Romance." The song debuted at McQueen's Paris Fashion Week show last fall.
