Rocky Dawuni and Cary Sullivan’s Afro Funké has provided African music lovers a place to celebrate the continent’s culture, art and joy for well over a decade. While it used to be weekly, the events now are more sporadic, which makes them all the more can’t-miss.
This “Winter Reunion” features the party’s longtime co-founder driving the decks: KCRW’s Jeremy Sole, known for rhythmic mixes he calls “musaics.” Sole spins hip-hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, Afrobeat and remixed world beats, blended and bonded with tribal breaks and unique turntable treatments. DJ Glenn Red (La Junta) joins Sole on the decks.
Live instrumentation is a big part of Afro Funké, too, and this gathering offers live percussion by Kahlil Cummings. There’s also Afro-fusion dance, vendors and live painting.
