Better Than... the DMC show LACMA put on a few months back in the Bing Theater. I love DMC, but that shindig was awkward.
Composed of Murs, Eligh and Scarub, 3MG reunited for a performance last night at LACMA, of all places. The first in a series of hip-hop concerts co-curated by Murs for the museum, the sold-out show was framed in front of Chris Burden's Urban Lights sculpture, and was a pretty damn good way to spend a Thursday night. No, not the most raucous show to be found, but hey, it was hip-hop at LACMA.
Murs entered to a rush of shouts, claps and raised arms, looking positively cheerful. The reunited 3MG held it down for a few songs, jumping around on stage with impressive energy. In fact, I'm just not used to that kind of energy at LACMA, and it was kind of freaking me out, in that "wait, am I at a museum?" kind of way. (The good way.)
At one point Eligh and Murs receded to give Scarub the stage. Man, that man's mouth can move. After a few songs that got people throwing the L-and-A with their hands, Scarub offered up some advice: "Turn around and get that person's number. 'Cause in a few months it's gonna be cold. I'm just sayin'." Slightly awkward. That would have gone over way better had we all been drunker.
Trading places with Scarub, Eligh took the stage. More shouts, clapping and raised arms greeted him. A few songs in and we got to "I don't know what you been told but everyone is getting old," which somehow really seemed to strike a chord.
Murs stepped in for a set. At a certain point he shouted, "This is West Coast hip-hop!" As if to prove the point, a timely cloud of smoke emerged following his "beaches ain't the cleanest but our weed is the greatest!" line.
Finishing things up, 3MG performed a few more songs together, once again jumping around stage; they're at their best together, so hopefully the reunion will not be short-lived.
In consideration of the neighbors, things wrapped up promptly at 9:59pm. Murs gave a shout to his LACMA collaborators and reminded the crowd to show up to next month's show, featuring Dumbfounded with Medusa and Gizzle.
Personal Bias: 3MG is great, but I'm basically a Murs fan.
The Crowd: In a few years they'll be taking their engagement photos in front of the Urban Lights sculpture, with fond memories of exchanging numbers thanks to Scarub's advice.
Random notebook dump: "Woke up quick at about noon, 'cause I had to be at LACMA soon."
