Sherman Oaks' Sweet Butter ranks high among L.A.'s wave of newish pastry shops that bake on the premises and offer delicacies beyond your parents' wildest dreams. Leslie Danelian, a former food stylist and caterer, has taken on a lot here, with a tasty breakfast and lunch menu in addition to a boulangerie, and the long lines every weekend attest to her success in pulling off. She offers sweets to please all in a setting with a distinctly Parisian feel: Outrageously gooey, frosted “morning buns” filled with tart house-made marmalade, Fleur de sel caramel brownies, bread puddings with brioche (in coconut-lemon or chocolate), cinnamon muffins filled with homemade peach or strawberry jam, mouth-watering chocolate chip cookies and of course lemon bars. The bakery case changes daily, so don't be in a rut — expect surprises. Savory offerings include rich bacon-cheddar scones and delicious grilled turkey sandwiches with fig jam and bleu cheese.
