At Martha’s 22nd Street Grill in Hermosa Beach, a low-key Californian/American restaurant, you can sit at a table looking at the palm trees and the beach, sipping an espresso and eating cornmeal pancakes. Just a half block from the sandy shores, this is as authentic Southern California as it gets. The espresso is not to be missed, nor are the omelets made with one of the ingredients that makes California great: avocado. Other breakfast fare includes blueberry pancakes and scrambled Havarti, and for lunch and dinner you can enjoy a grilled cheese, salad or burger. If you go for breakfast after 8 a.m., though, be prepared to wait for a table.

Best Eclectic Breakfast by the Beach

    Martha's 22nd Street Grill

I live in the South Bay, and I have some pretty specific breakfast-spot criteria: by the beach (why is this so hard to get in Southern California?); serves real coffee, i.e., espresso; and serves real breakfast food (there goes Starbucks).
