When Mexico City native Jimmy Shaw opened the first Loteria as a tiny market taqueria in the 3rd and Fairfax Farmers Market next to the Grove, it was a revelation: cochinita pibil, moles and Mexican stews on handmade tortillas, small plates and aguas frescas in the middle of a busy market. Now there are four other locations, in Hollywood, Studio City, Westlake Village and Santa Monica, lovely sit-down restaurants where you can get Shaw's excellent food as well as great cocktails. May there be many more. —Amy Scattergood
