This being L.A., there’s at least a handful of El Compadre restaurants. But this is the Hollywood, star-sighting one, and it’s gourmet enough for gringos looking to fill up on south-of-the-border staples like tacos, burritos and enchiladas. A la carte items start at $2.95 for tacos, while the rest of the extensive menu includes combo meals, nearly a dozen varieties of seafood and house specialties, like arroz con pollo, Sonora style shredded beef and Michoacan style steak. The nightly mariachi music enhances the vintage décor. But while El Compadre is a generational and big enough to accommodate large families, beware of the raucous before-and-after clubbing crowds, who flock here for the restaurant’s signature cocktail, the “flaming margarita.” Nothing tastes or sounds bad when you’re sipping tequila and coconut juice with blue fire rising on top.
