It’s always a pleasant surprise when you stumble on a gem of a French restaurant like Bistro Provence in a nondescript Burbank strip mall next to a Togo’s, Starbucks and Jenny Craig. Owners Stanko Mihajlov and Miki Zivkovic have brought a little bit of the south of the France to the Valley. This is bistro minus the attitude, as indicated by some of the light starters, including the fennel-crusted ahi tuna, crispy gnocchi, and a salad comprised of endive, manchego cheese and roasted beets. The rest of the lunch and dinner menu has dishes rich in herbs and olive oil, from classic French meals like bouillabaisse and beef bourguignon to foods shared by France’s Mediterranean neighbors, including lobster ravioli, seafood linguini and the house-made specialty hummus-grilled zucchini, eggplant and peppers with fennel and garlic vinaigrette. Sommeliers are on hand to help you pair your meals with a glass – or bottle – of wine. And if you are a studio type, the restaurant offers locals a four-course meal Tuesday through Thursday for only $26.
