Barnyard Venice | Venice/ Marina del Rey | American, New American | Restaurant
Eating at Jesse and Celia Barber's Venice restaurant Barnyard is very much like eating at the home of someone who cooks and eats well — not a showoff or even an ambitious cook but a food lover who likes to feed others. So a pork chop is big and juicy, served with chopped greens that taste of the warming interlude where vegetables and minerals meet. Grilled chicken, rubbed with harissa and served with seasonal sides, is juicy and fragrant. There are homey dishes like "pilota," an Italian fried rice that's a little bit risotto and a little bit paella, and a house-made cavatelli. And while we'd all be lucky to have friends who might roll their own pasta, if we did have such friends, this is what it would taste like — not mind-blowing but impressive for a home cook. —Besha Rodell
