Is Philly West Bar & Grill on Westwood Boulevard responsible for the overall lack of great Philly cheesesteaks in Los Angeles? Perhaps. Their light, chewy Italian rolls mimic the standard Amoroso version found in the City of Brotherly Love, and the thinly sliced ribeye is as nearly perfect a version as you'll find. Diehards opt for a spray of Cheez Whiz, but you won't catch more than a sideways glance if you ask the boisterous crew to pile on the provolone or white American instead. You'll always find loads of onions, and at Philly West you can suck down a birch beer or round out your meal with a Tastykake as well. The room is spare but complete, with a full bar, a few local beers on tap and an original 1980's Philiies world championship poster on the wall. What more could you want from your local cheesesteak shop?
