Though owners Robert and Angelica Jacoby named the West L.A. restaurant John O’Groats after a town they once visited in Scotland, the food here encompasses all things American and beyond: soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers. The Irish oatmeal and fish and chips are but a few of the distinctly British dishes. For a Mexican twist, try the fried haddock in a taco with tartar sauce. The original location on West Pico Boulevard – named the “best breakfast on the Westside” by former L.A. Weekly critic Jonathan Gold, along with loads of other publications – serves only breakfast and lunch, while the Encino branch, opened in 2009, also offers dinner. But heed Mr. Gold’s recommendation and stick with the morning grub, like the mango macadamia nut pancakes, Oreo cookie French Toast and cilantro potato pancakes and eggs. The wait might be long, but worth the time, especially while sipping an apple cinnamon mimosa.
