Venice's grand old Piccolo was famously a rare outpost of high-end dining south of Rose Avenue, back when Santa Monica was more expensive than Venice. Now top restaurants abound in the still-gritty-yet-suddenly-pricey beachside community, and Piccolo has delivered twins: a pair of younger, hipper, less expensive options called Hostaria del Piccolo. (One is part of Rose Avenue's thriving restaurant row; the other just east of Santa Monica's Promenade.) You'll see Italians everywhere at these restaurants, among both the wait staff and the guests, and both the food and the casual insouciance reflect that. Try the very good tagliatelle or, on Sunday, cacio e pepe, and wash it down with a glass of Barbera. It can get loud in these spare spaces with their hard surfaces and clean lines, but isn't that part of the fun?
