In a cozy space in Echo Park, El Cafe owner-chef Scott Zwiezen is serving vegan and vegetarian dishes with mostly Mediterranean flavors. Those who balk at seitan and tempeh will appreciate that Zwiezen uses neither, choosing instead to explore ingredients of the vegetable, grain and legume genre. "Vegan fondue" is a plate of roasted veggies with a nutty walnut romesco for dipping. The customizable baked tart with thyme and garlic is plush with the trappings of great comfort food. The spicy kale salad served with avocado and Feta cheese in a pert lemon dressing has achieved cult status. There are plenty of gluten-free options too. Reservations are highly recommended, as an open table is rare.
