Seven Days to a Better, More Culturally Aware You!

Things to do in L.A., May 9-15

By Libby Molyneaux
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 - 11:59 am

FRIDAY, May 9

Lilian Wu

West African dance and drum ensemble Dafra. See Saturday.

If you’re a Kids in the Hall fan, you already have your ticket for Live As We’ll Ever Be. The tour is said to be mostly new material. Of course, you’ve been practicing “crushing your head” over and over, wherever you go. That’s a wise thing to do, because it’s possible Dave, Scott, Mark, Bruce or Kevin could get sick and you’d be called up onstage to fill in. Orpheum Theater, 842 S. Broadway, dwntwn.; Fri., May 9; $39.50-$52. (213) 480-3232.

SATURDAY, May 10

(Sing to the tune of “California, Here We Come.”) “Santa Monica, here we come/Right back where we started from/Where Beemers and Hummers park in compact spots/Your rent can top two grand/But SaMo’s still tops/The Santa Monica Festival really has it all/Bollywood, African and Brazilian sounds will all be there/So let’s all head to the salty air!/’Cause we sure can’t afford to live there!” What rhymes with “free bike valet”? (Repeat as necessary.) Fishtank Ensemble performs this year! Clover Park, 2600 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica; Sat., May 10, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; free. (310) 458-8350 or www.arts.santa-monica.org.

SUNDAY, May 11

It’s Mother’s Day. And yes, she’s still disappointed in you because you never became a professional magician like you said you would when you were 10. Appease her this once by taking her to Escape Reality at Magicopolis. Steve Spill provides the abracadabra. At least his mother must be very proud. This special Mother’s Day event includes a buffet lunch, champagne toast, party favors and magic show. Magicopolis, 1418 Fourth St., Santa Monica; Sun., May 11, 1:30 p.m.; $35. (310) 451-2241 or www.magicopolis.com.

MONDAY, May 12

As part of our New Year’s resolution (New Guinea Maori calendar) to be better humans and try to make others better humans, we bring you this show by Kathy Leonardo, a “sassy” (meaning “from NYC”) blues singer who’s playing on a bill that includes short comedy films by Steve DePena, who heads The Ground Floor sketch-comedy show. Check his shit out on MySpace. Damn funny. They’re giving 50 percent of merch sales to the American Cancer Society. Unurban Coffeehouse, 3301 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica; Mon., May 12, 7:15 p.m.; free. (310) 315-0056.

TUESDAY, May 13

Continuing all that be-a-better-person crap, it’s Bike Week Pasadena, a week of festivities, workshops, pit stops, bike-related films and rides that celebrate and encourage bicycling as a healthy alternative to the automobile. Tonight is Ladies Night, a gals-only road ride that winds through the streets of Pasadena to the Rose Bowl and returns to the One Colorado Courtyard for miniclinics, food and refreshments. Later in the week are guided tours, plus the Tour de Pasadena (Wed., May 14, 6 p.m.) and the Heaven on Wheels Ride (Fri., May 16, 7 p.m.). All are free. Presented by Pasadena Department of Transportation, One Colorado, Cyclists Inciting Change Through Live Exchange (C.I.C.L.E.), One Colorado and the Playhouse District. For further information, go to www.cicle.org or call (323) 478.0060.

WEDNESDAY, May 14

Jim J. Bullock, Mindy Cohn, Estelle Harris, Eric McCormack, Michael Urie, Peter Paige, James Kyson Lee, Rachael Harris — if you have any idea who any of those people are, you obviously watch a lot of teevee and won’t want to miss a star-studded installment of Legendary Bingo, benefiting Hot in Hollywood, which helps fund the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Hamburger Mary’s, 8288 Santa Monica Blvd., W. Hlywd.; Wed., May 14, 8 p.m. (323) 654-3800.

THURSDAY, May 15

If your sister lived in Ghana and was engaged to a superpopular hiplife singer who recently won Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, you’d be prone to pimp the following: Kwaw Kese performs for the first time outside Africa at this week’s Afro Funke club night at Zanzibar. No idea what he’s singing about — it’s all in Twi — but his megahit “Abodam” has most Ghanaians doing this crazee fist-to-head gesture that’s all the rage on the streets of Accra. Zanzibar, 1301 Fifth St., Santa Monica; Thurs., May 15, 9 p.m.; $7. (310) 451-2221.
