The Duke Spirit are a well-oiled garage-punk machine who rock hard and dark and tight like Nick Cave's Bad Seeds filtered through a shoegazer edge-softener. Led by the charismatic Liela Moss, whose voice bears a strong resemblance to that of Souxsie Sioux, the band showed real promise on their 2006 debut and have hit their stride on this 2008 release, combining pop hooks with soulful grooves and noisy, gnashing guitars.
