Federal raids on downtown Los Angeles Fashion District businesses and related bank accounts turned up a whopping $65 million, much of it in cash, that authorities say was drug money headed to the Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico, the U.S. Attorney's Office in L.A. announced today.

The whopping seizure of bank funds and currency, the latter of which was put on display for the press, was part of three cases against various fashion businesses, including lingerie and maternity concerns, that investigators say took drug money and exchanged it for imported goods so that the money would seem legit as it traveled south to the narco lords of Sinaloa.

In one case, feds allege, a business laundered $140,000 paid for the to release a man held hostage because 100 kilos of cocaine he was supposed to distribute ...

  • But first, a suspect, via the LAPD
Don't know about you, but it seems to us the but first a selfie meme is being taken to the extreme by some young people these days. (As in, Yeah, we're about to get arrested ... but first a selfie).

In this case, a young woman is caught on security video during a burglary in an exclusive neighborhood, namely Bel Air. She lounges on a patio bench, pulls her phone out of her pocket, and appears to give herself the but-first-a-selfie treatment before she and four others allegedly make off with loot.

Here's what the Los Angeles Police Department says happened:

Updated at the bottom: Authorities believe the date went back to Oregon, and they're searching for him there.

Los Angeles authorities should have been aware that Miley Cyrus' Video Music Awards date, 22-year-old Jesse Helt, is wanted in Oregon, according to Martin Silbernagel, Community Corrections director for Polk County.

When asked if the Los Angeles Police Department and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department had previously been notified that Helt had a warrant for his arrest in Polk County, Oregon, Silbernagel says, "Yes, all of the above."

Helt had come to L.A. and was at a youth homeless center called My Friend's Place in Hollywood when the pop star dropped in for a visit recently:

L.A. County Sheriff's Department officials said overnight that they were investigating the possibility that a Friday night shooting in West Hollywood could be related to the rash of five other random attacks, including four murders, that have rocked Los Angeles in recent days.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced yesterday that a "person of interest" in some of the shootings had been jailed after a one-hour standoff Sunday night with its SWAT team in Sylmar. The man was identified as 34-year-old Alexander Hernandez. He was being held in lieu of $1 million after he allegedly shot and killed two dogs on Saturday, police said.

A man described by police as a "person of interest" in the seemingly random drive-up murders of three people in the San Fernando Valley yesterday morning was detained by cops after a SWAT standoff last night. Police were also looking for possible links between the Sunday violence and as many as two other slayings in Los Angeles last week.

The man's identity was not released. And because witnesses described as many as a two people in a gold or tan SUV used in the shootings, it's still possible at least one suspect in the shocking attacks is still on the loose.

Authorities were probing the possibility that the shooting of Suge Knight early today at a pre-Video Music Awards party hosted by singer Chris Brown might have been gang-related, according to reports.

While TMZ says that a possible gang rivalry might have sparked the violence at 1Oak nightclub on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, RadarOnline says it was possible that attackers were on the same side of the gang divide and were unhappy that Brown had left their clique.

The attack in the 9000 block of Sunset Boulevard was reported at ...

Los Angeles police today were searching desperately for a suspect or suspects involved in what were believed to be random, murderous attacks on several people, some of whom were on their way to church, in the San Fernando Valley this morning.

There were reports that cops also were investigating any possible links to a 6 a.m. car-to-car injury shooting of a female motorist Wednesday in Atwater Village.

Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Liliana Preciado told us the two cases had a few things in common:

Seated at a desk in his Inglewood apartment on a recent Friday evening, the 59-year-old shuffled legal documents, news clippings and letters until he unearthed a photo of a young man wearing a white dress shirt and a black tie — Brandon Spencer at age 18, suited up for work as a security guard.

Now the younger Spencer wears a different uniform. He has recently begun serving a 40 year prison term for opening fire at a Halloween party two years ago at the University of Southern California.
