The 10 Most Shameful Things to Admit in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the most diverse cities in the world. Unfortunately, that diversity doesn't always extend to its opinions.

This is a city that has virtually no Republican Party to speak of, that has banned plastic bags in supermarkets and condomless porn (while the state of California has banned foie gras and Kosher-for-Passover Coca-Cola). Things that would be perfectly acceptable in other cities are treated as downright horrifying here.

Here, then, are the 10 most shameful things to confess to in Los Angeles (Mind you, dear reader, LA Weekly, Voice Media and this blogger wish no shame upon anyone; rather, these are things that other Angelenos will make you feel ashamed of, either implicitly or explicitly):

At first, riding a bicycle through Mumbai seemed like a death wish. I saw lines of cars, scooters, rickshaws, horses, oxen and even human-pulled carts lurch into intersections before the light turned green. I hesitated at the crosswalk, holding up traffic and setting off honking from behind. I was petrified by cars going the wrong way, pedestrians hopping between buses, scooters pulling onto sidewalks. It was like the arcade game Frogger, except in real-life, with much higher stakes.

The game was not limited to Mumbai. As I spent two years cycling from France to China, the scene replayed in some of the world's most dense, overcrowded metropolises — Istanbul, New Delhi, Hanoi, and Shanghai, where traffic rules are more like “guidelines.”

Yet, despite this chaos, I still felt more comfortable on a bicycle there than I ever do during my daily bicycling commute in L.A.  Here's why:

10 Obscure Rules of the Road Every Angeleno Should Know

We could all use a refresher course in California's driving laws and vehicle codes.

Despite increasingly strict rules for teen drivers, the number of hoops you need to jump through to get behind the wheel of a two-ton road weapon in this state is pretty low compared to countries like Germany and Finland, the latter of which includes a driving-on-wet-streets test. There, righting an out-of-control car is taught to the newest of drivers.

Back in the comparatively dry Golden State, we're lucky if even veteran motorists know the law. We talked to the DMV, the California Highway Patrol, the state Office of Traffic Safety, and traffic lawyer Mark Gallagher to give you a refresher course in some of our relatively obscure or well-abused rules:

Ah, Southern California: Land of the yoga-posing, weed-smoking, laid-back individual.

If only that stereotype were true. Safeco Insurance this week unveiled a nationwide survey on aggressive driving that found Los Angeles is one of the top cities in the nation for this behavior.

So keep calm and carry on without flipping each other off in traffic, Angelenos:

California's texting-while-driving ban took effect at the beginning of 2009.

Did that make you put the phones down? No way. Of course the period since 2009 has seen the introduction of the most-popular, inexpensive iPhones yet, the 4 and 5 series, as well as the emergence of Samsung's popular Galaxy line of smartphones:

The driver of a Pruis says, in so many words, "WTF!" when a crazed motorist on the 110 freeway near USC throws a can at his windshield for no good reason. Now the CHP is investigating the incident, Officer Jose Barrios tells the Weekly.

WTF indeed. It's all captured on tape. And it's the greatest road-rage video in quite some time. It captures a complete psycho going bonkers and making what appear to be physical threats to a motorist named Austin Ho, who had his dash cam rolling:

Should hands-free communication behind the wheel -- talking, texting, emailing, even Facebooking -- become illegal? As cars become more and more connected to the Internet, there's growing concern about all the distracting activities you're able to do, even if you don't have to use your paws to do them.

You might call it productivity, but the AAA says it's dangerous. The organization has conducted the most comprehensive study of hands-free, in-car communication yet, and the results are not encouraging:

Are smart people better drivers? Maybe, maybe not. But your own casual research on the streets of Los Angeles would suggest a strong correlation between idiots and crap motorists, right? (Just look at their vacant, zombie faces).

New research published this week in the journal Current Biology says there's a clear connection between folks with high IQs and those who can track "the movement of small objects faster," according to a summary:

Did you know that bicyclists are entitled to a whole traffic lane, all to themselves?

Yes. In an effort to make L.A. urban traffic slow down even more, Metro, the folks behind the bus and the subway, remind you that bicyclists have the same right to hold up traffic as any little old lady driver from Pasadena.

Sort of:

Boy we suck at driving in the rain. No stereotype could be more true.

The idea that we don't have as much practice at it holds some, well, water. But it's really the all-wheel-drive-having douches in Porsche Carrera 4s, Range Rovers, and red-neck, Baja-style trucks racing through torrents who emphasize the obvious. Here are some tips on how to start driving right in the wet:
