See our latest: Robin Williams Hanged Himself, Had Bloody Knife at His Side

Actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead in his home in Marin County today, the local sheriff's department announced.

Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that deputies were called to Williams' Tiburon, California home about 11:55 a.m. based on a report of a man unconscious and not breathing.

Coroner's investigators suspect "the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia," but an official cause will be determined after an autopsy tomorrow and subsequent drug tests (which usually take weeks), authorities said:

Williams was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m., the lieutenant said.

His publicist told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor "has been battling severe depression of late."

In May his return to television after years on the big screen was met with cancellation. CBS pulled the plug on The Crazy Ones after just one season.

Boyd said a 911 caller sent cops as well as first-responders from the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection District to the home Williams shares with his wife.

The actor had last been seen at home at 10 last night, he said.

[Added at 4:19 p.m.]: Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, issued this statement:
This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.
[Added at 4:22 p.m.]: Williams, who admitted to having an alcohol and cocaine problem in the 1980s, had been in and out of rehab over the years. Just last month it was reported that he was going back again.

At the same time, the actor became an avid runner and seemed to find solace in his time pounding the pavement.
