The 4th of July madness is behind us, but there is no break from cops cracking down on drunk drivers.
And so this weekend authorities are warning you that they'll be looking for motorists under the influence in Malibu, Pasadena and Compton:
-Tonight from 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. the L.A. County Sheriff's Department says it will have a checkpoint waiting for you somewhere in Malibu. They're not saying exactly where. They don't have to.
-Tonight from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Pasadena police plan a checkpoint "at an undisclosed location," according to a statement from the department.
*[Added at 11:38 p.m.]: A tipster says the checkpoint is at Del Mar Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue:
-And tonight from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. there will be a checkpoint in the city of Compton. Again, sheriff's deputies aren't telling exactly where.
Despite the lack of specific checkpoint locations, this is more than enough to deter you from getting behind the wheel wasted. Don't do it. Badges will be waiting.
The Pasadena Police Department says:
The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
[Update at 1:25 p.m.]: This just in from the LAPD. The department has its own anti-DUI operations planned for tonight:
-There will be a checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Olympic Boulevard and Blaine Street in Pico-Union, near Staples Center.
-There will be a DUI "saturation patrol," meaning extra cops will be on the streets looking for drunk drivers, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Hollywood area.
-And, finally, there will be a DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Sepulveda Boulevard and Raymer Street in Van Nuys.
