If you're tired of L.A. constantly having the some of the highest gas prices in the nation, there's a small consolation.

If you're the flying type, the area also has some of the most affordable air fares in the entire U.S. of A. That according to a U.S. Department of Transportation domestic air fare survey released this month:

Long Beach Airport ranked as second in terms of being a big-city hub with some of the most-affordable air fares in the nation.

It was beaten out only by Atlantic City. It bested Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Orlando. Not bad.

And, with Memorial Day Weekend -- and all the fume-spewing traffic it brings -- just a few days a way, you might want to consider the cost of driving. On your sanity.

We'd put the blame for Long Beach's low fares squarely on its signature carrier, Jet Blue. We looked up a weekend trip to the New York area next month and came up with a couple options starting at $265 one way.

Not bad.
