Updated at the bottom with the officer charged. First posted at 4:02 p.m. Monday.

An LAPD officer was arrested today on suspicion of lewd conduct in a case involving underage victims, authorities told the Weekly.

The officer was arrested in the Santa Clarita area, a sheriff's official said. According to an LAPD sergeant:

He has been assigned home pending internal and criminal investigations.

A spokeswoman for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, which made the arrest, said a statement would be released in the next hour.

Until then details appeared to be scarce.

We did find out that the case was being investigated by that department's Family Crimes Bureau.

[Update at 11:38 p.m.]: The sheriff's department tonight ID's the suspect as 28-year old Miguel Schiappapietra.

According to sheriff's inmate data, he was arrested at 11 a.m. Saturday and was held in lieu of $100,000 bail pending a court date tomorrow.

Detectives say in a statement that about 9 a.m. Saturday the suspect lured two girls under the age of 10 to his Castaic area residence in the 28000 block of Branch Road and "committed lewd acts."

[Update at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday]: Prosecutors today announced that Schiappapietra has been charged two felony counts of lewd act on a child under the age of 14.

He was due in court downtown for arraignment this afternoon.

The District Attorney's office states that the officer, who has six years on the force, "was arrested Saturday morning after two girls, both under the age of 10, told detectives that Schiappapietra sexually molested them."

If convicted he could face 10 years behind bars. Prosecutors said they would ask that bail be set at $200,000.
