New York has its taxis. San Francisco has its trolleys and bicycles. In Los Angeles, perhaps no other mode of transportation is as emblematic as our limousines and town cars.

Over the weekend we had not one but two limo-related accidents, one of them tragically fatal. The first happened ...

... 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the 20300 block of Pacific Coast Highway when a woman was fatally struck by a limo en route to pick someone up, sheriff's officials said.

The victim was later ID'd as 21-year-old Sarah Salam of Germany. Sheriff's authorities indicated the limo driver was not drunk and was not at fault in the collision near Moonshadows restaurant.

Sgt. Shawn Ruda of the sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station:

It may be an unfortunate accident.

The second accident was reported about 8:52 a.m. yesterday in the 10300 block of Woodley Avenue in Mission Hills, according to the L.A. Fire Department.

A minivan and a limo with only a driver inside collided, sending the van into a convenience store, apparently a 7-Eleven, according to our reading of the LAFD's reports.

The limo driver was okay; the minivan driver -- not so much.

She sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized in fair condition, the LAFD stated.
