A UCLA water polo player has been arrested on suspicion of rape, according to a university statement.

The suspect, 19-year-old Hakop Kaplanyan of Glendale, and the victim knew each other, a school official told the Weekly:

The attack happened on-campus, at a residence hall, according to a UCLA police statement.

Kaplanyan was arrested April 2 after the victim filed the report alleging she was raped the same day, officials stated.

According to L.A. County Sheriff's Department inmate data he was released from jail two days later and is due in court April 25.

Kaplanyan has been suspended from the school but can appeal, according to the statement.

UCLA police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein told us she's happy the victim spoke up, which doesn't always happen:

We encourage students to report everything. I'm pleased they understand that.

[Update at at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday]: Kaplanyan's lawyer, who was not named, tells ABC Eyewitness News that his client didn't do it. In fact, the attorney says, the teenager and the reported victim had consensual sex. He said the allegation amounts to "defamation."
