The drive-by shooting isn't the only way people are attacked in Southern California: A particularly evil suspect resurrected a weapon with a sordid, political history, the Molotov cocktail, over the weekend.

Last night the Long Beach Police Department released video (after the jump) of the firebomb attack hoping that someone might recognize the man who set fire to a victim who was sitting next to a market.

It happened ...

... Friday at 7 p.m. at the El Paisano Super Market at 245 W. Pacific Coast Highway, according to a Long Beach police statement.

The suspect, described as a twentysomething man in a striped shirt, walks along the side of the market, turns to the front of the place, hits the victim with the device, and runs, according to security video.

Cops believe the suspect might have been burned because of the surprisingly healthy explosion of flames created.

A woman with a young child in a stroller is just a few feet away and pulls her young one backward as flame erupt, the video shows.

The victim, who we're going to guess is homeless because he was sitting there and because he was described as someone who hangs out there, runs to the parking lot, where onlookers try to douse the flames with shirts and jackets.

Reports indicated he was burned on his lower body but would survive: Police said he was in "serious condition at a local hospital."

In the meantime cops are wondering aloud if the sitting man was the target or, because he was so close to the front of the market, just happened to be in the way as the suspect aimed at the retailer.

In other words, either it was random, or the target was the market. Maybe.

In any case, if you recognize the guy, call 562-570-7260.

[Update at 12:32 a.m.]: Long Beach police just put out this suspect description:

- male Hispanic

- 25 to 30 years-old

- 5'8' to 5'10"

- 180 pounds

- wearing a light colored short sleeve button-down shirt with vertical stripes and blue jeans
