Eight people were injured, three critically, after a car apparently plowed into students after class let out for the day at Hemet High School in Riverside County, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The accident at 41701 Stetson Avenue in East Hemet was reported at 2:44 p.m., according to the department.

Five minor injuries were reported. Another two victims might have been hit but ...

... refused treatment, according to fire officials.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says witnesses reported that a student driver might have driven through a red light and plowed into the students at a crosswalk.

Most of the victims, it appeared, were students, but one was an adult, the paper reported:

The accident happened just after school let out, while dozens of students were crossing Stetson Avenue to get from the main campus to the student parking lot adjacent to the football field, just north of campus.

The driver, whose name and age were not released, was detained by California Highway Patrol officers.
