The tragic death of 4-year-old Miriah Cobb in Westchester yesterday is being investigated by the LAPD's Abused Child Unit.

A member of Cobb's family called 911 around 11:30 a.m. -- and when paramedics from the L.A. City Fire Department arrived, they found her hanging in the back of a bedroom closet in the family's apartment. She died soon after at a nearby hospital.

LAPD Detective Darryl Butler tells the Weekly that...

... the little girl's cause of death has yet to be determined. But at this point, he says, "it doesn't look like there was any foul play."

Butler says he's not sure exactly what kind of hanging position the child was in when she was discovered. The first responders from the Fire Department will be interviewed to better determine how she died, says the detective.

Cobb's family lives in a large apartment complex called the Madrid Apartments -- located near LAX at 8650 Belford Avenue.

The commander of the Abused Child Unit, Captain Fabian Lizarraga, told ABC7 last night that Cobb "was found unresponsive by her family members, in need of immediate medical attention. They immediately called the fire department, paramedics, they called us, and unfortunately they were not able to save her."

And one witness told the station: "I saw a gentlemen who came out crying, his face was pretty much white, without blood, and he was crying, the grandmother wailing and then I saw the body."
