Updated at the bottom with some gory details. First posted at 5:01 p.m. Wednesday.

In today's edition of WTF, we bring you one Jason Wilmert.

Authorities allege the 35-year-old was nourishing himself with dead stray cats. Not only that, but reports indicate he might have even killed and skinned the cats for his daily meals.

We don't make this stuff up:

Kern County Sheriff's Department inmate records show that not only was Wilmert arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals but also based on this unique violation: "ANIMALS COMMONLY KEPT AS PETS OR COMPANIONS; USE AS FOOD."

He was arrested early this month and has a court hearing Friday.

Wilmert was being held in lieu of $7,500 bail. He also faced other allegations, including resisting a peace officer, littering and unauthorized burning of refuse, worth another $15,000 bail, according to records.

Fox 58 in Bakersfield interviewed neighbor Joe Nuno, who gave this wonderful account:

The lady right here saw him holding a tail, skinning it. It is still alive ... I heard a cat cry really, really loud. And I came outside, because I'm an animal lover.

He peeked into the suspect's backyard and says he witnessed feline a la grill:

He's cooking. He's got a little burner going.

He said it smelled like "awful meat."

We called Kern County Sheriff's officials this afternoon for comment but had yet to hear back. Read more here.

[Update at 5:44 p.m. Thursday]: The Kern County Sheriff's Department today sent a statement about the case to the Weekly. It contains some gory details.

It says that deputies were called to the suspect's house at 1015 Wilson Ave about 10:50 a.m. on Feb. 3. The caller said the man had decapitated a cat.

Deputies say they confirmed the claim:

The deputy then walked to the rear yard of the residence down the driveway and observed what appeared to be the decapitated head of a cat lying on the grass in the back yard ... Deputies searched the home and located the carcass of the dead cat.

Soon they arrested him on suspicion of "possessing the carcass of a pet for food."
