Update: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. No, really. Can someone please tell us.

Updated after the jump: Twitter claims it was an "accident." Right. The official Anonymous account is still down. The others appear to be fake. Also, Sarah Palin was a victim. Originally posted at 5:50 p.m.

We've got an inkling all hell is about to break loose. Because if there's one thing the U.S. government should have learned by now from Julian Assange's whole Wikileaks debacle, it's don't mess with hackers.

The Twitter account of the "Anonymous" hacker organization that shut down the official Mastercard and Visa websites earlier today in support of Wikileaks was just censored by Twitter. (Mastercard and Visa had terminated their services in regard to Wikileaks donations.)

The hackers' original profile, @Anon_Operation, which now has no followers, reads:

Sorry, the profile you are trying to view has been suspended.

Earlier today, during the shutdown of Visa and Mastercard, the hackers Tweeted: "Operation Payback. TARGET: WWW.VISA.COM :: FIRE FIRE FIRE!!! WEAPONS."

Now, either Anonymous or a phony is using brand-new account @Anon_Operationn (they just added an 'n' at the end) to get the word out. Twenty-two minutes ago, they Tweeted:

Guess this clears up the question of whether Twitter would stoop so low as to censor the #Wikileaks trend!

Stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, read the Weekly's exclusive interview with the Los Angeles branch of Anonymous.

Update: Obviously freaked out after Anonymous threatened to take down their site, Twitter has restored the original @Anon_Operation account. Correction: The original account is still shut down. The ones that popped up in its absence (including the one we posted here) are obviously fake. If you have any clues as to what the hell is going on, feel free to let us know.

This is what Tea Party fave Sarah Palin had to say, in an e-mail to ABC, about getting her website and credit-card information hacked by Anonymous:

"No wonder others are keeping silent about Assange's antics. This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts."

She had formerly ripped on Assange via Facebook, and suggested he be punished as a terrorist. Damn! All this free speech is making our cheeks hurt!
