L.A.'s move, which only councilman Greig Smith opposed, would ban official city travel to the state, prohibit new city contracts with Arizona-based companies, and review city contracts with companies in the state to determine which ones could be terminated.
It remains to be seen how far the city is will to go in its action against Arizona: Los Angeles has strong ties to the state, including ownership interest in two power plants (one of them is on sovereign, Native American land) and a deal with the state for Colorado River water.
Still, the travel ban alone could have an impact.
The boycott was proposed by council members Janice Hahn and Ed Reyes.
