Maybe Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks was right when he called Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's budget proposal for the next fiscal year a "fantasy." Along with optimistic revenue projections, the document stated that only about 750 layoffs would be needed.

On Tuesday, the city's chief legislative analyst, Gerry F. Miller, said the number of layoffs needed to help balance the budget would be more like 1,761.

Of course, such a move wouldn't be popular with the city unions that have close ties to the mayor and City Council. But L.A. is facing a $492 million deficit July 1, when the new fiscal year kicks in.
