Nevermind his jive talking or alleged snubbing of black leaders during an African-American History Month kickoff in City Hall. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is down like Jim Brown, and he wants to prove it.

So while the city streets fester in potholes, the L.A. budget piles $350,000 a day in red ink as a result of budgetary inaction by Villaraigosa and the City Council, and the Los Angeles Police Department is making do with fewer officers on the streets because of the city's $212 million deficit, the mayor is focused on the big picture: Kids learning about the super-role-model Ru Paul.

That's right, Mayor V. took time out this week to condemn an African-American History Month exercise at Wadsworth Elementary School in South Los Angeles in which pictures of Ru Paul, Dennis Rodman and O.J. Simpson were displayed along with those of more upstanding black luminaries.

"African-American Heritage Month celebrates the innumerable contributions of black Americans and should be regarded with respect and reverence," Villaraigosa stated.

Three white teachers behind the displays of a successful drag queen/singer, a successful basketball player and an all-star athlete-turned-robber were suspended by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Of course, the three have their downsides (actually, Ru Paul seems fairly upstanding ... on six-inch heels!): Rodman has gotten in trouble for partying at his Newport Beach home; Simpson might or might not have killed and robbed people. We get it: They're not the best roll models (Ru Paul excepted ... on roller skates!).

"I urge the Los Angeles United School District to take swift and appropriate action with respect to the teachers involved," Mayor V. stated. "We cannot stand for such myopic behavior by those whom we entrust to teach and inspire the next generation."

True that, Mayor V. But, um, don't you have bigger fish to fry? And on that note, let's get back to the program.
