MILF and Cheese

I sense a guilty-pleasure hit in ABC Family’s alternately snappy and weirdly sexual new show Kyle XY, which debuts Monday night. The story of a thick-browed, pouty-lipped teenage boy (Matt Dallas) of mysterious origins, who one day emerges from the woods naked, mute and confused — gay men can be forgiven for assuming he went missing from some bacchanalian Abercrombie & Fitch shoot — sports an appealing ludicrousness and fresh-scrubbed prurience I wouldn’t have expected from this network. It’s as if Andy Warhol and X-Files creator Chris Carter had dreamt up a series. Naturally, this buffed-and-toned Kaspar Hauser — uploaded to our world with math smarts, bewilderment over basic emotions and, to justify a few ab shots, no bellybutton — is brought home by a caring female psychologist (Marguerite MacIntyre) with a husband, a snark-witted preteen son and a boy-crazy teenage daughter, because keeping him at a government facility would make this a sci-fi show, whereas bunking him in suburbia makes it an edgier Seventh Heaven. So far Kyle XY, with delectably cheesy fish-out-of-water laughs, looks like catnip for gays and teen girls. And in its head-scratchingly suggestive moments between the attractive blonde mom and the sweet-faced Kyle, the show could even inspire a wealth of MILF fan fiction on the Web. Stay tuned.
