As we lurch inexorably toward sociocultural bankruptcy, Texas’ ultimate underworld overlord, Willie Nelson, steadily assumes more significance — not just because he’s one of this nation’s finest-ever songwriters, taking us from “Crazy” to “Yesterday’s Wine” and far beyond, and not just as one of the last surviving originators of country’s midcentury honky-tonk poetics, but because he represents, in its truest essence, the American spirit — the rugged individualist, beholden to none, stoic, preternaturally wise, absolutely indomitable and possessed of the mythic cowboy’s endearing dog-eared dignity. Having his cannabis-enriched, jazz-informed hillbilly philosophizing served up on Hollywood Boulevard is in itself somewhat notable. Nelson briefly lived in Hollywood, crashing at Bobby Bare’s pad here in the late 1950s, so this is something of a prodigal son’s return, and, yep, home is where the heart is.
