Wadada Leo Smith is one of the grandmasters of free jazz, although the septuagenarian trumpeter takes issue with calling his improvisatory systems “free.” More than a decade ago, Smith invited a pianist 30 years his junior, Vijay Iyer, to join his Golden Quartet; Iyer would prove to be adept at his own systems of music. Today, Iyer is at the pinnacle of modern composition and improvisation, as a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and Harvard professor.
