The first season of CNN’s Emmy-nominated United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell followed the San Francisco-based comedian and podcaster as he embedded himself in various communities and subcultures across the country, whether it was with members of the KKK in the South or inmates at San Quentin or hipsters in Portland, Oregon. Bell starred in FX’s short-lived Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, and is releasing his first book, The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell, on May 2. Ahead of its premiere on April 30, Film Independent at LACMA hosts a screening of the second season’s first episode, “Immigrants & Refugees,” followed by a discussion with Bell.
