Composer-arranger Quincy Jones recorded three iconic big band albums between 1969 and 1971 that remain as fresh today as they were four decades ago. Tonight bassists Christian McBride and John Clayton lead an all-star big band in music from this trilogy — Walking in Space, Gula Matari and Smackwater Jack — at the Hollywood Bowl. Two of the sessions’ most prominent contributors, flutist Hubert Laws and vocalist Valerie Simpson (later of Ashford & Simpson) will be on hand to reprise their roles, along with guests including trumpeter Sean Jones, pianists Dave Grusin and Alfredo Rodriguez, guitarist Lee Ritenour, and drummer Lewis Nash. Opening the evening will be bass wizard Richard Bona’s Mandekan Cubano and Dirty Loops vocalist Jonah Nilsson.
