Oscar-nominated Lyn Goldfarb and Emmy-winner Alison Sotomayor began producing their documentary, Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race, in 2008 during President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, drawing parallels between the soon-to-be first African-American president of the United States and the first African-American mayor of L.A. The film – narrated by Alfre Woodward, and airing on PBS Aug. 18 – includes more than 100 interviews with family, friends, colleagues and journalists that tell the little-known story of Bradley, from grandson of a slave born in Texas to police officer to mayor, which ended after five terms in the aftermath of the 1992 L.A. riots. Following the screening, Goldfarb and Sotomayor take part in a panel discussion.
