When it comes to moody yet jangly British post-punk from the ’80s, The Smiths and The Cure receive the lion’s share of the praise, with Dave Gedge’s Leeds outfit The Wedding Present often criminally ignored, particularly on this side of the Atlantic. Sure, the band are an acquired taste, with Gedge allowing his very Northern English accent to color the vocals on old songs like “You Should Always Keep in Touch With Your Friends” and “Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?” But then, Americans didn’t need much persuading to get on board with the equally accented Morrissey. And hey, 2005’s Take Fountain was named after Fountain Avenue right here in L.A. Above all, fans of dark indie should check out The Wedding Present because Gedge is still a powerfully emotive songwriter, as last year’s Going, Going … album proves.
