Director Penny Woolcock and scenery designer Dick Bird's imaginative evocation of a Sri Lankan fishing village adds a layer of visual enchantment to L.A. Opera's presentation of this often-overlooked opera. Georges Bizet's memorably romantic musical passages compensate for librettists Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré's thin story about two friends (ardently stirring tenor Javier Camarena and gravely resolute baritone Alfredo Daza) driven apart by their mutual attraction to a mysterious priestess (charismatic coloratura soprano Nino Machaidze). Plácido Domingo conducts the first four performances, with the following two led by Grant Gershon.
