The Besnard Lakes don’t write songs so much as they craft long, hypnotic, Pink Floyd–style soundscapes. The tracks on the Montreal band’s latest album, A Coliseum Complex Museum, and a related 2015 EP, The Golden Lion, are shorter than songs on their previous releases, but they all have similar, ponderous tempos flecked with occasional traces of shoegazer psychedelia. Echoes of nature linger in such tracks as “The Plain Moon” and “Nightingale” as guitarist Jace Lasek and his bassist-wife, Olga Goreas, cast their reverent, hushed voices into a hazy void. At times, the languorous moods and the airy, wan harmonies can get pretty monotonous, but there are moments when the surging guitars and faraway vocals combine for an ecstatic state of wonder, especially on gauzy fable “The Bray Road Beast.”
