“Capitalism is a cataclysm,” Talib Kweli declares on his recent album Fuck the Money. “When pursuit of the money is your only goal, then you lose control, then you lose your soul.” It’s best to pay heed to the insights of the Brooklyn rapper. His words read like prophecies, and while Kweli might not be as commercially successful as more pop-minded rappers, he’s highly regarded by such peers as Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West for his lyrical insights and uncompromising vision. He echoes his warnings about the fatal allure of chasing dollars when he closes the record with a seemingly simple bit of wordplay that simultaneously admonishes and inspires the listener: “Go to college/They colonizing your mind like Rhodesia/What you, a Rhodes scholar?”
