“I want to smoke, and I want to drink and screw every time I think about you,” Suzanne Santo confides over a soft clucking of acoustic guitar on “Handshake,” from her debut solo album, Ruby Red. She’s not trying to be rambunctious. Instead, her rich, countrified voice is shadowed by a mournful intensity that’s soon overcome by an upwelling of violins and hard-rock guitar. Santo first came to attention with HoneyHoney, and there are elements of the local duo’s haunted Americana on the Butch Walker–produced Ruby Red. But there’s seemingly more sonic and psychic room in which the Cleveland native can wander and wallow on the soulful country-folk of “Ghost in My Bed” and the eerie, gospel-infused stomping and assorted junkyard clutter of “The Wrong Man.”
