In this line of work I witness endless “scary” metal bands, but only one ever truly scared me (and without any face paint or stage props in sight): Superjoint Ritual. Returning in 2014 after a decadelong disappearance, with a morphed lineup and its name Ritual-ly truncated, the New Orleans fivesome remain heavy metal in its most belligerent incarnation, a feral interbreeding of hardcore punk and groove metal fronted by former Pantera controversy magnet Phil Anselmo. Superjoint deliver their barbarous brew of weaponized riffery, breakneck unison stops-starts and Anselmo’s guttural utterances with paranormal savagery and distressingly bestial delight. Former Coal Chamber main man Dez Fafara seems to have entered this world with a single intention: to tour as much as possible, forever. Since 2002, he’s continued this quest with DevilDriver, a deathly groove-metal outfit in which he’s the only remaining original member.
