Sunflower Bean pump up a pop-rock sound that’s as sunny and flowery as their name. There are gauzy hints of dream-pop in such echo-laden tracks as “Only a Moment,” from the New York trio’s new album, Twentytwo in Blue. “The only constant is you’re changing,” bassist Julia Cumming and guitarist Nick Kivlen harmonize over ’70s-style classic-rock riffs. Some songs, such as “Twentytwo,” come off as fairly wispy and lightweight, whereas the fuzzier power-pop anthem “Crisis Fest” combines Sunflower Bean’s pop instincts with a more pleasing and harder-rocking foundation. Local singer Jesse Jo Stark creates an intriguing mood of romantic melodrama on “Fire of Love,” although her song shouldn’t be confused with the Jody Reynolds classic. “Darling, since we’ve been broken/I’ve been ravaged and stolen,” Stark confides amid shivers of spectral guitars.
