No doubt Iceland experimental-rock band Sigur Rós have grown a bit weary of the de rigueur comparing of their often glacial sound excursions to the vast frozen expanses and lava-spewing volcanos of their homeland. Well, they asked for it, didn’t they, with their chillingly beautiful series of albums, each etching out otherworldly etherealisms of massed electric guitars and singer Jónsi’s decidedly non–blues-based falsetto vocalizing. They’ve melted down influences of classical, minimalist, avant-rock and points in between, expanding their approach with the aid of choral groups, orchestras and electronics, but for this Bowl set it’ll be just the core unit, raw and unadorned. Opening is the International Space Orchestra, the self-described “world’s first orchestra composed of space scientists,” performing disruptive covers of Sigur Rós songs.
