Imagine what it would sound like if Kurt Cobain glued his emotional honesty into TRL-approved pop songs. Sad13 — aka Sadie Dupuis, the songwriter behind Boston grunge-pop band Speedy Ortiz — makes pop music that’s “empowering,” which is an overused term these days. It means very little when it’s used to generate buzz, but it can move mountains when it’s found deep within the architecture of the music. Sad13 reverse-engineers conventional pop into something a bit more feminist. In other words, if Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle” is the piñata, Sad13 is the baseball bat.
